Many people think that work at home professionals actually take more time off than they work. In reality, the opposite is true. If you work at home, people always know where to find you! This may mean that it is very difficult to actually take some time off. How can you take some time off?

Hire A Helper
If you want to take time off, you will probably not be able to afford to close up the shop. This means that you will have to hire a helper to manage the business. It is always good to have a neighbor, friend or relative who can help you.

Take Time In Small Amounts
One of the realities of having a small business is that you simply may not be able to take time off. In fact, you may lose business if you do this. For example, I remember taking time off to go on vacation for a few days. When I returned, my client had found someone else to finish the project I was working on! Since then, I have taken vacation time on weekends only.

Work A Reduced Work Load
I have found that the best way to go on vacation when you own a business is to bring your work with you! Several years ago I volunteered to be a chaperone for my daughter’s school trip abroad. I worked out the details with the home office and worked from my hotel during the evenings. I still got to chaperone the trip, and I still was able to keep the business afloat.

If you are going to take time off, communication is important with your clients. You should talk to them personally before hand and then communicate with them at least briefly during your vacation. This could be done via email or even via Skype.

Make Time For Yourself
There is no denying that it can be difficult to take time off when you own your own business. However, it is important to take some time off in order to keep up your energy and enthusiasm. Constantly working will just wear you down and may cost you some business because of that.

Step Away From The Computer
Sometimes, it really is that simple. Set boundaries with your clients when you establish a business relationship. Teach them that you are not available 24 hours a day 7 days a week in the very beginning and things will go better.

Even though you are self-employed, you are still entitled to this benefit. Taking time off will enable your subconscious realize that success is rewarded with some fun time. Search people or friends and go see a movie, or do wakeboarding. Do whatever it is to calm you or whatever is enjoyable to you that will definitely recharge your batteries.
